(ENGLISH) EXCLUSIVE PETER
CONNELLY INTERVIEW
You were the second
composer in the Tomb Raider series. By that time the games were already a huge
success. Were you a fan? Did you feel pressured when you first got hired?
I was such a huge fan, less than 12 months
before I started working for Core, I had been playing TR2 with my nephew and
was thinking “I really wish I could work on a game such as this”. Within 6
months later, I had my first interview at Core Design and on the 14th September
1998, I started working for Core Design. Not long after that I was assigned to
TR4, so you can only imagine how excited I was within and, YES, I was shitting
myself to follow in Nathan’s footsteps.
Tomb Raider: The Angel
of Darkness has one of the most acclaimed soundtracks of the TR franchise. How
do you feel about that?
It was such an amazing experience to be able to
record the music at Abbey Road and to be performed by the amazing London
Symphony Orchestra. Not many people get to experience that double whammy so
we’re forever grateful (both me and Martin Iveson (co-writer of AOD)) to had
been given such a magnificent opportunity. Probably the highlight of my career
so far.
TR: AOD was obviously
darker than the previous games. What were the instructions that the producers
gave to you? And where did the inspiration come from?
A lot of the themes were based on my original
TR4 and TR5 themes. In all honesty, no one really came to use with a brief.
Core was quite relaxed with forcing creativity and we were left to our own
devices and the creativity was left with us. We knew where we wanted to go with
the music, it was obvious, but we could rest assured that, if there was an
issue with our direction, it was brought to our attention but 9.9 times out of
10, it was all plain sailing and left to us.
How do you feel being
a part of the classic games and watching the direction that Crystal Dynamics is
taking now with the reboot? What would you change in nowadays Lara if you
could?
Crystal Dynamics are doing an excellent job
with the franchise and I really like their take on it. Sure, it’s not going to
be the same as the original series, but times change and it’s still such a huge
success that it would be stupid to veer away from the direction it’s currently
heading in. I don’t think the new Lara looks like the Lara I used to know but
that’s just my opinion.
What about the other
composers? Do you have a favorite one?
I have a lot of respect for a lot of composers.
I admire the works on John Williams, his music can make me cry and anyone who
can make this happen through their music is a genius. I also love the works of
Hans Zimmer, everything he touches turns to gold and I totally admire his use
of synthesizers and electronic sounds in his scores… HUGELY inspirational.
If we had, today, the
complete trilogy that TR: AOD was supposed to start, what do you think would
have been your approach to the next soundtracks? Any idea?
The lessons learnt when scoring the music to be
played by real live players was such a huge learning curve, the music could
only get better and, as it’s been over 15 years since the LSO recordings, I
have learnt so much more on many levels as a composer / producer / orchestrator
so, given the opportunity to do something like this again, I believe it could
only get better.
Would you like to
leave a message for Lara Croft PT and for the Portuguese and Brazilian fans?
Thank you all, the TR community, WORLDWIDE, is
such an amazing community and I am so humbled to have been part of the
phenomena. Hopefully there will be more opportunities. Love to Portugal and
Brazil xx
O Tomb Raider: The
tinha feito no TR4 e no TR5. Para ser honesto, ninguém nos deu instruções. A
E quanto a outros
compositores? Você tem algum favorito?
Eu tenho muito respeito por muitos
compositores. Eu admiro o trabalho do John Williams, a música dele consegue
(ENGLISH) EXCLUSIVE ANNIE ROIG INTERVIEW
You were one of the
official Lara Croft cosplay ambassadors in SDCC last year. How was that
experience for you?
It was an unbelievably incredible and hilarious
journey! I made a ton of new friends, got to catch up with old ones, posed for
pictures with hundreds of fans, filmed various promos for all of the Tomb
Raider social media channels, had dinner with voice actors, enjoyed a beautiful
Tomb Raider panel where Meagan Marie made me cry (in a good way!), and I made a
fool of myself in front of everyone during a Zombie Escape Room challenge! So
many wonderful and exciting memories were made, and I’ll never forget them!
What other characters
have you played through cosplay? What are the ones that you still want to play?
At this point it’s almost impossible to keep up
with all of the characters I have cosplayed other than Lara Croft, but I’ll do
my best to list them off! I’ve cosplayed as various characters from the
Resident Evil series such as Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Claire Redfield, Rain
Ocampo (from the Resident Evil movies) and Moira. I’ve also cosplayed as
various characters from the Silent Hill series like Maria, Angela Orosco,
Heather Mason, Lisa Garland, Bubble Head Nurse, and I’m currently working on a
Cynthia Valesquez costume. Other videogame series include Alice from Alice:
Madness Returns, and Chloe Price from Life is Strange. I know there’s a ton
more, but I don’t want to keep you all day! And as far as which ones I would
like to continue cosplaying as would be Lara Croft, Chloe Price, and Jill
Valentine!
What is your favorite
Lara costume ever? Have you cosplayed that one?
I will always have a special spot in my heart
for the Classic outfit, but I also really love her Legend costume as well as
her outfits from Underworld. I have done photo shoots with her Legend outfit,
but I have not been able to create an Underworld costume just yet. That would
be a fun challenge!
Earlier this year you
interviewed Judith Gibbins for LARA CROFT PT on Skype. How was that? The fans
simply loved the result, but tell us a bit about the backstage.
I am so happy to hear the fans loved the
result! It was an exciting and terrifying experience all at the same time. I
never thought I would have an opportunity such as this to interview the literal
voice of my childhood! Judith was so nice, and even took the time out to ask me
how my son was doing after we finished recording because she had heard he was
sick. She is extremely down to earth and quite the sweet heart. It’s crazy to
think that even after the interview we still keep in touch when we can!
What direction would
you like Lara to take in the next games? Any wishes for 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider'?
Personally, I’m fine with where Lara is going,
so I’m excited to see what new chapters unfold. As far as ‘Shadow of the Tomb
Raider’ goes, this is news to me! I’ve been so caught up in family life and my
new medical career that I haven’t been able to stay up-to-date with the latest
news. Sad, I know, but now I’m super excited to learn all about it!
Are you excited for
the Tomb Raider movie? What are your thoughts about the film so far?
I am very excited about the Tomb Raider movie!
From the trailer and photos I’ve seen, it looks like Alicia will do Lara
justice. I’m interested to see what the story will be, I like how they’re
making it very similar to the reboot game as well. I’ll definitely have to hire
a babysitter so I can see this one in theaters!
Would you like to
leave a message for Lara Croft PT and for the Portuguese and Brazilian fans?
I just wanted to say thank you so much for
taking the time out to read my interview! For those that have been following my
work for some time now, I promise I’m working on a ton of new fun costumes and
shoots planned, and even family cosplay shoots planned! I appreciate your
continued support and endless positive feedback and love you all send me on a
daily basis. I almost have to pinch myself because it doesn’t feel real! You
are all so wonderful, and it’s been an honor and a pleasure.
